1 January 2004 - 31 December 2006
Notice
On Saturday, 31 December 2005, at 1:00 pm, at the Freestate Happy Wanderers New Years Eve event in Columbia, the MVA President, Mr. Dennis Lynch, presented achievement certificates to those who have earned them.
General Information: Following on the heels of the highly successful "Walk Across Maryland into the New Millennium" program, the MVA has decided to continue to promote Walking in Maryland by sponsoring a "Rediscover Maryland program". Similar to the first program, this program rewards those individuals who complete a walk in each of Maryland's 23 counties and Baltimore City between March 2004 and December 2006. However, unlike the situation that existed at the beginning of 2000, there are now regularly scheduled, seasonal, or year 'round events in all but two counties: Somerset and Wicomico. The Rediscover Maryland committee will establish either year 'round or seasonal events in these two counties, so there shall be ample opportunity for participants to complete their books. There is something in each walk for all of us to Rediscover Maryland.
The Rediscover Maryland Committee (RMC) :Phill Wilder, John Carolus, Bob Schmick, and Jim Fons are the organizing forces behind this program. The MVA has asked them to serve as the Rediscover Maryland Committee, which will oversee the administration of the program. This committee proposed to the MVA the guidelines under which this program will operate. The MVA approved those guidelines at their October 2003 meeting.
Registration for the Program: In order to keep track of how many people are actively participating in this program, participants are requested to register with the RMC. There is no cost to register. You may register by sending a request with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to
Mr. Phill Wilderor by filling out the on-line form and emailing it to the Rediscover Maryland committee.
You will receive in the mail a program card listing each of the 23 counties and Baltimore City, with space to enter the event stamp from a walk completed in each county/city.
Participation in the Program: This program is open to all walkers. As described above, you must register at no cost with the Rediscover Maryland Committee to obtain the program card in which you will place qualifying stamps. In order to get an event stamp in your program card, you must pay the credit fee for the event.
Awards: Participants who complete events in all 23 counties and Baltimore City and return their completed program card to the PoC may elect to receive a Certificate of Completion and, optionally, a T-Shirt with a map of Maryland and "I DISCOVERED MARYLAND" printed on the shirt (sample is shown at the top of this page.) The cost of the Certificate is $3.00. The cost of the Certificate and T-shirt is $10.00. T-shirts are available in youth sizes: XS (2-4), S (6-8), M (10-12), L (14-16); and adult sizes: S, M, L, XL, and XXL. For XXL, add $2.00. Link to picture of T-shirt.
Other T-shirt: Also being offered for sale to all registered participants are T-shirts with the same map but printed with "I'm rediscovering Maryland. I'm Volksmarching All 23 Counties and Baltimore City. 2004". These T-shirts will also cost $10.00 and are available in the same sizes as above. These T-shirts may be obtained at any time from

Carryover from the "Walk Across Maryland" program: People who started but did not finish the Walk Across Maryland program may submit books to PoC along with registration request. Their Rediscover Maryland card will be returned with entries already made for those counties walked during the earlier program.
Maryland Events: To assist volkssporters in locating events which will help them complete the Rediscover Maryland program, the MVA has provided a list of qualifying events. We have organized the list two ways, by county and by date. The county list contains all events which qualify for a stamp in the corresponding county, including YREs. The date list contains a list of event other than YREs which qualify for a stamp organized by date. In the date list, the qualifying county is shown in the event description.
MVA Sponsored Events: In support of the Rediscover Maryland Program, the Maryland Volkssport Association has sanctioned Year Round Events in counties which have a limited number of weekend events. The C&O Canal series provides events in Allegany and Washington Counties, the Crisfield event is in Somerset County, and the Salisbury event is in Wicomico County. For more information on these events, check out their web pages: C&O Canal events and Crisfield and Salisbury events. For more information about the MVA, check out our home page.
