The Washington DC Area Volksmarching Club was founded in March 1979. Its first event was at Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Maryland on October 27-28, 1979. The award was a medal depicting the Capitol Dome. There were 867 participants. This was the beginning of a long and honored tradition of outstanding volksevents. The Washington DC Area Volksmarching Club and its members strive to make the AVA and volkssports household words.
Club members have served the American Volkssport Association at the national level as national (currently both the AVA President and AVA Treasurer) and regional officers, as the core of the 1991 AVA Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, as a strong contigent serving the 1997 AVA Convention in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and as part of the planning committee for the 2005 AVA Convention in the Atlantic Region.
At the state level, WDCAVC members have served as officers in both the Maryland Volkssport Association and the Virginia Volkssport Association. Numerous club members have received Certificates of Service, Meritorious Service Awards, Distinguished Service Awards, and very special President's awards at the AVA Conventions.
The club meets on the Third Tuesday of every month except June and December. Except for the November dinner meeting, we meet at the Barrett Library.
During the months April through September, the meeting follows a night walk which begins at the Barrett Library.
The November meeting is a dinner meeting with club elections in the odd-numbered years.
